One of the most effective preventive measures is maintaining adequate hydration with <strong>fresh, pure, and cool drinking water<\/strong>. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) recommends that workers have continuous access to cool drinking water and drink <strong>before they feel thirsty<\/strong>, as thirst is not a reliable indicator of dehydration. Workers in hot environments should drink water regularly\u2014approximately <strong>250 mL (one cup) every 15\u201320 minutes<\/strong>\u2014to replace fluids lost through sweating.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Keep Your Body Cool \u2013 Stay Productive<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Drink <strong>fresh, potable, cool water<\/strong> throughout the work shift.<\/li>\r\n<li>Do not wait until you feel thirsty to hydrate.<\/li>\r\n<li>Take regular breaks in shaded or cooled areas.<\/li>\r\n<li>Replace fluids lost through heavy sweating during physically demanding work.<\/li>\r\n<li>Avoid alcohol, excessive caffeine, and high-sugar drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.<\/li>\r\n<li>For prolonged heavy work with significant sweating, electrolyte-containing drinks may be appropriate in moderation.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Recognize the Warning Signs<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Early symptoms of heat stress include:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Excessive thirst or dry mouth<\/li>\r\n<li>Fatigue or unusual weakness<\/li>\r\n<li>Headache or dizziness<\/li>\r\n<li>Muscle cramps<\/li>\r\n<li>Heavy sweating followed by reduced sweating<\/li>\r\n<li>Nausea or confusion<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Stop work immediately, move to a cool location, drink cool water, and notify your supervisor if any symptoms develop. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate medical assistance.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Safety Reminder<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Fresh, pure, and cool drinking water is your first line of defense against heat stress.
