Fresh, Cool Drinking Water Saves Lives – Stay Hydrated, Prevent Heat Stress

Working in hot environments places additional stress on the body, increasing the risk of dehydration, fatigue, reduced concentration, heat exhaustion, and potentially life-threatening heat stroke. One of the most effective preventive measures is maintaining adequate hydration with fresh, pure, and cool drinking water. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) recommends that workers have continuous access to cool drinking water and drink before they feel thirsty, as thirst is not a reliable indicator of dehydration. Workers in hot environments should drink water regularly—approximately 250 mL (one cup) every 15–20 minutes—to replace fluids lost through sweating.

Keep Your Body Cool – Stay Productive

  • Drink fresh, potable, cool water throughout the work shift.
  • Do not wait until you feel thirsty to hydrate.
  • Take regular breaks in shaded or cooled areas.
  • Replace fluids lost through heavy sweating during physically demanding work.
  • Avoid alcohol, excessive caffeine, and high-sugar drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.
  • For prolonged heavy work with significant sweating, electrolyte-containing drinks may be appropriate in moderation.

Recognize the Warning Signs

Early symptoms of heat stress include:

  • Excessive thirst or dry mouth
  • Fatigue or unusual weakness
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Heavy sweating followed by reduced sweating
  • Nausea or confusion

Stop work immediately, move to a cool location, drink cool water, and notify your supervisor if any symptoms develop. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate medical assistance.

Safety Reminder

Fresh, pure, and cool drinking water is your first line of defense against heat stress. Hydrate early, hydrate often, and never wait until you are thirsty—your safety and performance depend on it.
